Explanation

The Chola is introduced first. Ponni is the old Tamil name of the Kaveri, and the wealth of the Chola land is shown by vines fed on Kaveri water climbing to the very tops of the areca palms.

That the three Tamil crowned kings, Chola, Pandya and Chera, come first reflects Pugazhendhi's pride in Tamil.

Nalavenba, Swayamvara Kandam; compare Mahabharata, Vana Parva (Nalopakhyana)

The Chola King

The maid praises the Chola king of the Kaveri country. Damayanti passes him by.

To reflect on

A land's wealth begins with its river.
