Meaning

Nalan, lord of a land where the dark-blue lilies nibbled by calves rival the eyes of women in the courtyards, the youth who had done penance for a single small glance from the lady's large eyes, came in wearing his fragrant garland and sat in the middle of the hall.

Explanation

Nalan arrives at the svayamvara hall. One verse gives both the richness of his land and his longing for Damayanthi.

That he had ‘done penance’ for a single glance of her eyes shows the depth of his love. He had gone as the gods' messenger and hidden his own love to do his duty; today he comes as a suitor himself.

Nalavenba, Swayamvara Kandam; compare Mahabharata, Vana Parva (Nalopakhyana)

Nala Enters the Hall

Nala enters the swayamvara hall and takes his seat.

To reflect on

True longing is a kind of penance, and its day of fruit will come.
