Meaning
Let us dance, let us sing the pallu, let us dance because we have reached the freedom of joy! The days are gone when the priest was called lord; the days are gone when the white man's port was the master; the days are gone when beggars had to be bowed to; the days are gone when we had to run errands for those who cheated us. Everywhere the talk is of freedom; everywhere the talk is of freedom, and that we are all equal is now certain. Let us blow the conch of victory; let us take it to the whole earth and proclaim it. Let us salute the plough and the workshop; let us scorn those who eat and make merry in idleness. We will not pour water on barren ground; we will not wear out our bodies working for worthless men. We have learned that the land we live in is ours; we have learned that it is our own right. From now on we will be slaves to none on earth; we shall live as servants of the Perfect One alone. Let us dance, let us sing the pallu, because we have reached the freedom of joy: dance, dance, dance, let us dance!

Explanation
The pallu is a field-workers' dance-song, and choosing it is itself a political act. Four servitudes - the priest's lordship, the white man's port, bowing to beggars, running errands for cheats - are pushed away one by one with 'the days are gone'.
'Salute the plough and the workshop' is the centre of Bharathiyar's economic thinking, and the lines about not watering barren ground and not working for worthless men are the sharpest in the song.
Conch, earth and equality belong to the language of the national movement, but one line turns it: be slaves to none, be servants of the Perfect One alone - slavery must go, devotion need not.
