Meaning
In the year one thousand seven hundred and fifty-six of the Vikrama era, the jewel of teachers who had divided the lion race that spread through Panchala dwelt happily at Anandapura - he who was a great ocean of wisdom, a poet of good fame, a leader of heroes who would ward off even the falling sky with the sword, the king named Guru Govind Singh who guarded the earth. Knowing his sacred command, the strong men of the army of Panchala came from many quarters, day after day, and gathered at Anandapura; thousands upon thousands of warriors came together to learn what the Guru wished. And as the hosts of flowering groves, the clusters of fresh flowers that wear a smile, and the fields spread with green came, it was like the shouting of blessings on a holy day, 'may our coming be welcome'. The disciples thronged to hear the sacred word of the Guru of growing fame, thinking: what will he say? what will he grant us? what command will he give that shall make all our seven times seven births happy? Like gods yearning to learn their task they came before the great one and lifted their eyes; and see - suddenly he has mounted the seat! A form made of youth and strength and the greatness of the beginning. With the great fire of the divine flashing in his eyes, the splendour of the teacher's sacred crown, the sharp conquering sword lifted in his hand smithered sparks, so that the tongue trembles to speak of it. The countless warriors looked on that form, and like a pride of lions dazed before a magician come down from the sky they were hushed, bowed low, and bent their crowns. Showing the sword's tip, the glorious Guru spoke the wish of his heart; and the words broke forth like a furious volcano roaring, while the lips of the divine child moved. "I wish this sword to bathe in the breasts of men; the thirst of the goddess of dharma that is never quenched wants many a blood and many an offering from you, devotees. Who comes forward to tear open his heart and pour the blood on the ground and take away the Mother's thirst?" At this the disciples were shaken, and for a moment no tongue moved. A short space passed in silence; then out of the thousands who sat there one warrior came forward and spoke: "Guru-jewel! May the god of unconquerable dharma, whose thirst our slaying of a conqueror will not quench, take him as an offering and grant his grace!" A smile blossomed on the holy face. The Guru led him into the temple; and as if one had come to a pool, the blood flowed, and the assembly saw it; then, 'Look! the true Guru shines!', he came forth from the temple, having finished the first offering, and shining-faced he leaped like lightning and returned to his place. Again lifting that blood-stained sword towards the sky the Guru-king spoke the words that follow: "I have set my heart on planting this sword in the hearts of men; but the Goddess asks yet another offering! Devotees! who among you is bold enough to give his blood now and quench Kali's thirst?" At this yet another daring warrior stood before him and made his wish known. Him too he led kindly into the temple, and the Guru completed the second offering; and the assembly trembled at the blood. In this way he made five offerings and gladdened the Supreme. Men cannot win worth merely by taking dharma into their understanding; the great are those who show their hearts for dharma to flourish and let the sword pierce them and die; they are the true ones, they are the saints. Wishing to know such good men among the hundred thousand servants that would appear, the Guru, an ocean of cool grace, resolved to make a cruel test. Seeing those five who would give their dear lives out of the fullness of love, he concluded that there were countless men of that nature, and rejoiced. The five saints, like five good gems, whom the servants reckoned as fallen and dead in the fierce red blood and gone to heaven, he brought out of the temple into the great assembly! The servants shouted! They poured like a waterfall! They wiped their eyes and looked again, and sang many blessings, 'Victory to the Guru-jewel, victory to the lion Guru!', and danced. Then that grace took birth in him; like the bright sun smiling he smiled a little, embraced those faultless saints, the five, with heart, spoke his blessings and looked at the assembly, and - see him roar like the sea! "Friends who have known that the one Kali and the Goddess of our golden good land are one! You may well have trembled that I went to make the five offerings: that was a mere show. Did I take your lives by my hand? It was I who hid the beloved and worked your heart's trial in all the five. I have known that you are the true sons of the motherland of gems. The pieces you see cut here today with my sword - look at them. In the very way of the trial I saw your courage; my heart rejoiced, my cares fell away. The dharma Guru Govind took, the way of his disciples, has won great fame. Those who stand in that way are still called Khalsa; 'Khalsa' means the order of the assembly of the saints. Not making the base the root of the assembly of saints, the noble Guru graced those five and their fellows; and the society took the name Khalsa. That the people of the ancient great land called Bharata did not let their spirit wear away, did not fall short in manliness, did not let valour and effort die - this the sage made the world know. As Mukunda took birth that day, so a divine leader appeared in glory; and when he raised them with heavenly words from which all earth's stain had gone, saying, she does not lie dead; with youth and courage joined, our mother will rise to bear the honour of her race, the sage pressed this upon the understanding of the world. Like the First One who fashioned the frame of the five great elements, the sage, through five disciples as the root, divided the Bharata race that belongs to the country; and dharma flourished. The smiling princes who held the rod of cruel rule began to tremble; and Freedom laughed. In the year one thousand seven hundred and fifty-six of the Vikrama era, Guru Govind of wide fame gathered his warrior disciples and made a divine court - a sight rare to see! In a beautiful jewelled seat the sage-king sat; around him stood the five who were life's servants; with his own sacred hands he put garments on them, hung garlands, seated them with honour, melted over those five like the apple of his eye, blessed them tenderly and said to the assembly: "See! I have first made the Khalsa; he shall guard both the land and dharma well; this society is now the water of dharma." Then the lord, standing by the river that ran nearby, had water brought in a small iron vessel, stirred it with the sword's tip, recited the mantra, restrained his mind, made his whole will one with Siva, and pronounced the vow; and the great goddess of victory, the Mother, came leaping and stood there. That sacred sword struck the water of the river, and it took the powers of the famed land of Bharata that stood bewildered and set them moving, and gave them good life, and the whole land stirred. Setting the five of penance before him, he cleared the mantra-water of all stain, became all grace, and touched their eyes. Look, people of the world! In that very instant when the Supreme's hand touched their eyes, the good way opened for the whole land! All the disciples received this initiation. The lord said: "Friends! know that the name of the initiation you have received is Amrit, a rare gift; all who receive it receive the great grace. Hear now the dharma declared to you: there is one God; all men born in the world are brothers; men are equal and belong to freedom. Disciples! In clan, in deed, in everything, from this moment you are all one; wipe out divisions! To be divided is to die. As for the thousand castes that men divide within the Aryan race, let those who divide perish. All of you belong to one heroic caste that rises to cherish dharma, God, truth and freedom - a caste that destroys injustice and cruelty, a caste whose fierce face knows not how to be crushed, a caste from whose hand the iron seal, the tight belt and the sword never slip, a caste that follows the friendship of good brothers, a caste whose king is God alone, whose helpers are all mankind, whose enemy is ferocity, whose creed builds a republic. Do not scorn dharma! Do not bear ferocity! Cherish the sacred motherland for ever and live in fame, live in fame!" So spoke the lord and blessed them with joy; and the disciples praised his feet and shouted. The flag that Guru Govind the king raised waved on high and the world praised it; and the rule of Aurangzeb danced and perished.

Explanation
This is a dramatic scene from the life of Guru Govind Singh - the founding of the Khalsa at Vaisakhi in 1699. Bharathiyar writes it both as a devotional song and as a political declaration.
'I wish this sword to bathe in the breasts of men': five men come forward. But the poem's turn is that the Guru does not kill them; he hides them and tests their courage. The offering is a trial, not a death.
After the Amrit initiation the dharma declared is wholly egalitarian: one God, all men brothers, wipe out divisions, to be divided is to die, let those who divide the thousand castes perish.
The last line, 'the rule of Aurangzeb danced and perished', is history's verdict in a single line: tyranny danced and vanished, while the Khalsa's flag rose.
