Meaning

I am not a slave to strangers - I am not a slave to strangers. I am the servant of the two feet of Bharata Devi of lasting fame. I am a servant like the Tilak sage, who is the very limit of all shining great qualities. I am a servant of that lord Bupendranath who walks into the cruel prison with a smile. I am a servant like our children, who do not swerve from truth even when the guards stand before them. I am a servant of the feet of that kinsman whose devotion to dharma is unbroken even when fire is kindled on him.

Explanation

The title says the song follows the tune and the idea of a song from the Nandan story, but Bharathiyar turns the word 'slave' around: not a slave to strangers, yet a slave to the country and its leaders.

Each verse sets a name in place - Tilak, Bupendranath Dutta, the children, and the one who will not let go of dharma even when fire is lit. The word slave has become a new rank of honour.

'Even when fire is kindled, devotion that will not let go of dharma' is the centre of the poem, and every other verse walks towards it.

To reflect on

How far can the word slave be turned into a word of honour, and how does this poem manage it?
