Meaning

Long live, our lord! Gandhi Mahatma, who came to give life to that land of Bharata which had sunk low in every country of this world, where poverty had grown beyond measure and freedom was lost and all was ruined - long live, long live! You have contrived a plan by which slavish life departs, the people of this land taste freedom, wealth comes, the citizen rises, learning and wisdom join and flourish, and the land attains leadership. You have won fame without end and stood first in the world. Shall I call you the one who brought the herb to loose the dreadful serpent's noose? Shall I call him who made an umbrella that bears the thunder and the lightning? What words of mine can praise you here? You have made a new plan, easy as building a new road on the earth, to drive out the fierce disease of dependence that brings sorrow without dawn. To count another's life as one's own, to reckon another's life as one's own life, to know that all living beings are God's form and God's children - that true wisdom of the spirit you resolved to bind into politics, which otherwise lies tangled in base war, killing and punishment. You scorned the way of war, which is the way of great slaughter, and held that the way of the good artists and true servants is the greater strength; you knew it to be the way of dharma. Non-cooperation, rich in near and certain fruit! Seeing what is coming to India by the right path, forget enmity and let the world live in good dharma!

Explanation

A song welcoming Gandhi's non-cooperation movement. The first part is blessing, the second part (marked 'வேறு', another) is philosophy.

The 'noose of the fierce cobra' is the bond of slavery, and he brought the herb for it; the 'umbrella that bears thunder and lightning' shelters from the storm. The two images give him the two roles of physician and protector.

The crucial idea is that he bound the wisdom 'all living beings are God's form' into politics: non-violent resistance is not a tactic but a principle, which is why the poem can say he scorned the way of war as the way of great slaughter.

The closing wish - forget enmity, let the world live in dharma - is the mature form of Bharathiyar's faith in non-violence.

To reflect on

What is the difference between seeing non-violence as a tactic and seeing it as a philosophy?
