Explanation

'Thagudhi' is another name for impartiality. Valluvar says it is good perhaps also because it is hard to reach. 'Pagudhiyaal paarpattu' is to know each one's due share and to act standing on the side of justice.

When justice is asked, our mind is pulled in many ways: kinship, friendship, money, fear. To rise above all these and give each what is his is impartiality. Even the enemy is included. The enemy too has his due.

The special strength of the verse is that it states impartiality not as a cool feeling but as a discipline of action. 'Ozhugap perin' means if one is able to conduct oneself. Thinking is not enough; it must show in practice.

Commentators divide 'pagudhiyaal paarpattu' in different ways. Some take it as acting not by the divisions of enemy, friend or stranger. Others take it as according to each one's merit and deed. In both, being unbiased is chief.

Impartiality does not mean giving everyone the same amount. Food for a child and wages for a worker may differ in measure. But the reason must be rightful claim, not like or dislike.

In the Hindu tradition Rama is the best example. Ravana was a cruel enemy who had abducted his wife; yet at his death Rama's heart softened and he told Vibhishana to perform Ravana's last rites properly.

We too can ask whether we can act justly toward our enemies. Not denying them what is due is the first step. From there worthiness begins.

A story

Rama Orders Ravana's Funeral Rites

In the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, the scene after Ravana's fall is deeply moving. Ravana died on the battlefield by Rama's arrow. The vanaras shouted in victory. Rama stood quiet.
Ravana's wife Mandodari and the other women of Lanka wept around his body. Vibhishana stood shaken at the sight of his brother's body. He hesitated to perform the last rites. For Ravana had done cruel deeds, abducted other men's wives, and driven out his own brother.

Rama spoke to Vibhishana. Valmiki puts into his mouth words to this effect: "Enmity ends with death; our purpose is fulfilled. He is as much mine now as he is yours. So perform his last rites."

That saying, 'maranantani vairani', enmities end with death, is still honoured as a classic of impartiality. Though Ravana was an enemy, Rama's view was that due respect should be given to him.

Rama showed both faces of justice here. In battle he opposed Ravana, because that was dharma. At the end he honoured him, because that too was dharma. In both, his mind stood free of bias.

This fits verse 111. 'Pagudhiyaal paarpattu' is each one's due share. Ravana's share was not only punishment but respect after death.

Vibhishana changed his mind on hearing this. He performed his brother's rites. Rama, seeing it, was satisfied.

In our own lives too we should give up carrying a quarrel after it has ended. Shaking hands with the opposing team after a match, respecting the other side after a case, are Rama's way.

Impartiality is not only toward friends; it is not losing humanity toward enemies. This is what the story tells us.
