Explanation

'Seppam' is uprightness and fairness. Valluvar says the prosperity of such a man does not decay and stands as a guard to his children too. 'Echcham' is what remains, the descendants.

Wealth that comes by crooked means seldom lasts. Lawsuits and enmities come with it. Wealth earned with fairness has no enemy and no fear, so it does not fall to ruin.

The verse speaks not only of money. A good name is also wealth. If a father lived honestly, the town looks on his children with trust. The words "he is that man's son" open many doors.

'Yemaappu' means protection. The fruit of honesty guards the descendants like armour. Money may be spent, but a name continues beyond time.

Commentators mostly see this as a benefit in this life; some add merit in the next. Both encourage fairness.

Yet this is a faith more than a promise. Even the honest may meet trouble at times. But in the long view Valluvar holds that honesty endures.

The verse reminds us that the greatest inheritance we can leave our children is an honest name rather than money.

Over generations what keeps a family standing is the trust its ancestors earned. Bank accounts and land may be divided, but the name "this is an honest family" stays in the villagers' memory. So impartiality is not only a virtue but a long-term investment.

A story

Elder Nallasivam's Fairness

This is an invented story. In a small village on the bank of the Kaveri lived an old man named Nallasivam. He was the elder of the village panchayat. Whether a land dispute, a quarrel over a field bund or a family rift, people came to him. When he gave judgment he never looked at who was kin and who a stranger.

Once a land dispute arose between his own younger brother and a neighbour. Everyone thought he would judge for his brother. But Nallasivam looked at the documents and ruled that the land truly belonged to the neighbour. His brother stayed angry and silent for some days.

That judgment cost Nallasivam's family a little in property. But trust in him grew in the village. All his life no one dared lie to him.

After his time, his son started a small shop. The capital was small. But villagers said, "He is Nallasivam ayya's son," and gave goods on credit, and merchants trusted him with loans. In a few years the shop became the biggest in the village.

In the grandson's time a school had to be built. Land was needed. The neighbour's descendants came forward: "Nallasivam ayya gave justice to our grandfather. Let this land be for the school," and gave it as a gift.

Though invented, we often see its truth. An honest person's name becomes a shield for his children.

This is what verse 112 says: the prosperity of the upright, without ruin, becomes protection for his descendants. Here the wealth grew as trust and good name.

When we bend justice today for kin or favour, we may ask what name we leave to our children.
