Thoarramsaal njaayiru naazhiyaa vaikalum / Koorram alanthunum naalunnum - aarra / Aranjsey tharulutaiyeer aakumin yaarum / Piranthum piravaathaa ril.

Meaning

The rising sun measures out each day, and death measures out and eats your days. So do virtue in abundance and let compassion be yours; no one is born who is not also born to die.

Explanation

The sun climbs and sets every day; that is the ruler by which time is measured. The sharpness of the verse is to say that death uses the same ruler.

The conclusion is therefore only two things: do virtue, and be compassionate. When death is certain, life is not wasted; it becomes urgent and fruitful.

The Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Sibi Weighed His Own Flesh

King Sibi was famed for giving. One day a dove fell into his lap in terror, and the hawk that had been chasing it demanded its prey. The king offered his own flesh to buy the dove's life, set the dove on one pan of a balance and his cut flesh on the other, and went on cutting.

No amount of his body weighed as much as the bird. At last he climbed into the pan himself. Then hawk and dove revealed themselves as gods testing him. What you give, you give from what you are still holding, and one day the holding ends.
