Meaning

The days allotted to each life will not go past their limit, and no one here has ever slipped past Death and escaped. You who have stored up great wealth, give it away now, for tomorrow the funeral drum may sound: tazhīm, tazhīm, taṇṇam.

Explanation

'Tazhīm tazhīm taṇṇam' imitates the beat of the funeral drum; the verse makes us hear it.

Our days are already numbered and will not be stretched. Wealth not given away will simply pass into other hands.

The Katha Upanishad

The Question Nachiketa Asked Death

From the Katha Upanishad. The boy Nachiketa saw his father give away old, worn-out cows as a gift and asked, 'Where do those who give such things go?' Angered, his father gave the boy himself to Yama.

When he reached the house of death, Nachiketa was not afraid. He waited and asked for three boons. The third was the great question: what becomes of a person after death? Yama, who counts out every life, was pressed into answering a child's question.
