Explanation

This couplet states why people strive for tapas. 'Vendiya venidyaangu eydhal' means to obtain what one wishes in the way one wishes. Because those who do tapas can obtain what they intend in the way they intend, Valluvar says, people strive for it 'eendu', here in this world.

Commentators give two explanations. Some take it as a practical truth that a person obtains by tapas what he intends in the manner intended, that is, a general belief that effort is not wasted. Others take 'what was desired' to mean high goals such as spiritual realisation, knowledge and purity of mind, which can be obtained only by tapas.

The couplet should not be understood as a magic wand. Tapas is not a tool by which wishes come true on their own; it is a way of training mind and body towards a wish. It points out that when effort that endures, order and resolve are present, the goal is readily reached. That is why people try tapas in this worldly life itself.

The ordered practice undertaken by a student to succeed in an examination, an artist to rise in his art, or an athlete to win a medal is also a kind of tapas, and their attaining the goal is the fruit of that effort. So tapas applies not only to temples and forests but to everyday life.

A story

Upamanyu's Ocean of Milk

The Shiva Purana tells the story of a boy named Upamanyu, son of the sage Vyaghrapada. They lived in poverty. One day the boy drank cow's milk at his maternal uncle's house and learned its taste. Returning home, he asked his mother for milk. The mother, poor as she was, mixed rice flour in water and gave it to him. Upamanyu drank it and said, 'Mother, this is not milk.'

Tearful, the mother said, 'My son, we are poor and have no means to give you milk. You can obtain what you want only if Lord Shiva grants his grace.' The boy at once said, 'I shall do tapas to Shiva,' and left for the forest. Though young, he chanted the five-syllable mantra and did tapas standing on one leg.

Seeing the intensity of his tapas, Indra came from heaven to test him. In Indra's own form he said, 'I shall give you whatever boon you want; give up Shiva.' Upamanyu firmly refused. 'Lord Shiva is my God. By his grace everything will come to me. Without him I want nothing.' Then Indra took the form of Shiva and tested him again. Both times his resolve did not change.

At last Lord Shiva appeared with Uma before the firm boy and asked, 'What do you want?' Upamanyu asked, the Purana says, 'Let my children always have milk and rice.' Shiva gave him an entire ocean of milk and blessed him: 'All prosperity will always be yours.'

A boy obtained what he wished, in the way he wished, through tapas. But what drove his tapas was not greed; it was sorrow at his mother's distress. His prayer too was not only for himself but for his children. This is a fine witness to 'venidya venidyaangu eydhalaal'.

From that day Upamanyu has been honoured among Shiva's devotees. His life shows what great height firm effort can bring even at a young age.

To reflect on

Is what you want most worth the discipline it would demand, and have you begun to pay that price in small ways?
