Explanation

This couplet shows the power gained through tapas in two ways: 'onnaarth theral', subduing or destroying foes, and 'uvandhaarai aakkal', helping and raising those who love one. Both, he says, become possible only through tapas. 'Ennin' means 'if one reflects'; so it is a truth that may not be seen at a glance but appears on deeper thought.

Many commentators give 'theral' the direct sense of destroying foes. Others explain it more gently as subduing or removing enmity. Since Valluvar elsewhere in his book exalts compassion and non-killing, there is room to take this as passing beyond the hostility of foes rather than killing them. A firmness of mind that does not fear the strength of foes is itself a power of tapas.

One of strong tapas can accomplish great deeds for himself and for those who depend on him. When firmness of mind that does not shake easily, long labour and restraint of the senses meet, a person reaches an extraordinary state. He gains the strength to shelter, like a shade, those who show him love.

In today's world we may see this as a practical fact. People of long training and discipline become able to face any challenge in their field, and they stand as a shield for those who rely on them. Quiet, long effort is the source of that strength.

A story

Arjuna's Penance

The penance of Arjuna is told in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Having lost at dice, the Pandavas had to spend twelve years in the forest and one year incognito. When the eldest, Yudhishthira, asked Vyasa for a way, the sage advised: 'Arjuna should do tapas to Shiva and obtain the Pashupata weapon; it will give you victory in war.'

Arjuna reached the Indrakila hill on the slopes of the Himalayas and began severe tapas. In the first month he ate fruit every third day, in the second month every sixth day, in the third every fifteenth day. In the fourth month he lived on air alone, standing with raised arms. The heat of his austerity troubled the world.

To test him, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a hunter, a Kirata. The demon Muka came in the form of a boar to attack Arjuna. Arjuna and the hunter shot the boar at the same moment, and a quarrel arose as to who had shot first. The quarrel became a fight. However hard Arjuna tried, he could not overcome the hunter, and his arrows were exhausted. At last he made a Shiva lingam of earth and worshipped it with a garland. Seeing that garland on the hunter's head, he understood the truth.

Shiva appeared in his true form and, praising Arjuna's tapas and courage, gave him his Pashupata weapon. Indra and other gods also gave him their weapons. By this power the Pandavas won the war.

By the strength of his tapas, Arjuna stood as a firm support to his brothers and to Krishna. The power to raise the loving hearts that trusted him and to defeat the foes who opposed him came to him through tapas, which is the message of the couplet.

The great rock relief at Mamallapuram is called 'Arjuna's Penance'; some take it to depict Bhagiratha instead. Either way tapas is its centre.
