Explanation

VOC's imprisonment comes in the middle of Bharathiyar's mature political experience. In eight lines the poem does two things: it announces news and takes a pledge.

'Vellalan' here is not a caste name but the farmer, the owner of the soil - the man who cannot be bought, the true owner of the land. Prison is not death, and coming back is the new story of a king returned.

The last line's double blessing is a fearless laugh: instead of weeping for the man in prison, he asks us to bless him.

To reflect on

A political report and a pledge in eight lines: how does brevity become strength?
