Meaning

You fell because of justice; the stranger grew strong and by wickedness came and did violence - this you bear. Like the hill-woman who strikes a tiger with her winnow, you made yourself small by strength and stood high by your deed! You fell because of generosity! When the enemy's army came on like a flood with force, without letting your thought grow weak, you took firmness of heart, holding that bright fame was the highest thing, and stood guarding the rights of a people whose law is truth. You fell because of honour! Though the king of the godless enemy held a strength that took its pride from heaven, your heart would not shrink back in fear of the wound; unwilling to retire, you stood against his path, saying, we will hold our ground! You fell because of valour! When the mountain came rolling down you would not slip aside to the edge and hide yourself; you made the weight light, you called the serpent a worm, and at the very moment you stood up against the enemy whatever his state. You fell because of daring! When the great enemy came on with countless armies and the pride of strong-armed warriors, you would not think of bowing, you would not count crouching as useful, you would not think of yielding - you stopped him, saying, stand! You did not count terror as wisdom, you did not account disaster a thing of any weight; when the bewildered enemy king broke in with strength and armies beyond number like a rolling flood, you stood against him, crying, let heads roll, let honour rise! Whoever the enemy may be, wherever he goes, let him not pass the border of the town and think himself ordered there; him who puts on the dress of war and comes in, the forest of his pride I will cut so that it has no place to root - so you stood. They say the scriptures ordain that whatever falls in the sacrifice returns to the world with greater valour and fame: when men act, those who grow faint in dharma fall, but there is a hearing, and at once they rise again, quickening and living anew. There are golden mansions that sink into the darkness of the assembly hall until the sun's light appears when the lamp's glow grows dim; even when unmeasured evil comes, they take no fear into the heart, they stand unmoved and high - is there sorrow for those who have courage?

Explanation

A poem celebrating Belgium's resistance to the German invasion in the First World War. Every verse opens with 'you fell because of' a virtue - justice, generosity, honour, valour, daring - so the fall is caused not by weakness but by something good.

The hill-woman who strikes a tiger with her winnow is a folk image of the small standing up to the great.

'Let heads roll, let honour rise' is the cry of the field; 'I will cut the forest of his pride so it has no place to root' makes arrogance a forest to be felled.

The last two verses turn to philosophy: what falls in the sacrifice rises again, and a golden mansion waits in darkness only until the sun comes. 'Is there sorrow for those who have courage?' is the poem's final answer.

To reflect on

Praising defeat as the cost of virtue - how much is consolation and how much politics?
