Natpunaar arrana nallaarum ahkinaar / Arputh thalaiyum avizhnthana - utkaanaay / Vaazhthalin oothiyam ennuntaam? vanthathae / Aazhkalath thanna kali.

Meaning

The cords of friendship have snapped, the good about us have dwindled, and the bonds of love have come loose. Look within: what gain is there in living on? The cry has already come, like the wail from a ship going down at sea.

Explanation

In old age friends fall away, the good around us pass on, and the ties of love loosen. What comes after that is the wailing of kin.

The image of a sinking ship's cry shows how suddenly that end arrives. The point: do good while you are young.

To reflect on

Do good before the cords give way.
