Panipatu soalaip payanmara mellaam / Kaniyuthirnthu veezhnthar rilamai - naniperithum / Vaelkannal enrivalai vehkanmin marrivalum / Koalkanna laakum kuninthu.

Meaning

In the dew-laden grove every fruitful tree has dropped its fruit and stands stripped bare — so it is with youth. Do not crave her overmuch, saying her eyes are like spears; she too will stoop and come to lean on a staff.

Explanation

The first two lines are landscape: in the misty grove the trees have shed their fruit and stand empty. In that same picture he shows the state of youth — when a thing that kept giving stops giving, what remains is bareness.

The staff-eyed woman is one whose sight has dimmed and who must feel her way with a stick. Eyes like spears will one day look for a staff: that is the heart of the verse.

To reflect on

The tree that kept giving will one day stand empty.
