வெறியயர் வெங்களத்து வேல்மகன் பாணிமுறியார் நறுங்கண்ணி முன்னர்த் தயங்கமறிகுள குண்டன்ன மன்னா மகிழ்ச்சிஅறிவுடை யாளர்கண் இல்.

பொருள்
வெறியாட்டு நடக்கும் களத்தில், வேலன் (பூசாரி) பாடலோடு ஆட, தளிர் சேர்த்த மணமுள்ள மாலை தன் முன்னே அசைய, பலியிடப்படப் போகும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டி அந்த மாலையின் இலைகளைத் தின்று மகிழும். அத்தகைய நிலையற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி அறிவுடையோரிடம் இல்லை.
Meaning
At the frenzied rite, while the priest dances to his chant, a goat kid about to be sacrificed nibbles happily at the leafy garland swaying before it. Such short-lived joy is not found in the wise.

பலிக்காகக் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட ஆட்டுக்குட்டிக்குத் தன் முடிவு தெரியாது; முன்னே அசையும் மாலையின் இலையைத் தின்று மகிழ்கிறது.
இளமையில் இன்பத்தில் மூழ்குபவனும் அப்படியே. சாவு அருகில் நிற்பதை அறிந்தவர் அந்த மகிழ்ச்சியில் மயங்கார்.
Explanation
The goat kid brought for sacrifice does not know its end; it happily eats the leaves of the garland in front of it.
So is the young man lost in pleasure. The wise, who know death stands close by, are not taken in by such joy.
