Meaning

With speech faltering, leaning on a staff, the gait unsteady and stumbling at every step, the body worn out — for those whose eyes still wander down the path of desire, there is no walking the path of safety.

Explanation

The verse shows a mind that has not slackened while the body has. The leg totters, but the eye still runs down the road of desire. Old age of body and youth of mind are set against each other in a single verse.

The path of safety is the guarded road, the way of virtue that protects you. Once the body has failed, that road can no longer be walked. The hint is plain: walk it while you still can.

To reflect on

The body accepts old age; the suffering is the mind's refusal to accept it.
