Meaning

Do good while it lies in your hands, without saying 'we are still young'. Along with ripe fruit falling, a good unripe fruit is sometimes shaken down by a fierce wind.

Explanation

Still young, we will do it later — that is the standard excuse for postponement, and he refuses it outright. Youth is not insurance.

The fruit image is exact: ripe fruit falling is natural, but green fruit is shaken down too. Death does not consult age. That is what makes the word later dangerous.

To reflect on

No good deed should be kept waiting on the word later.
