Explanation

The hero says a most comforting word: 'In this birth we shall not part.' On hearing it the heroine wept until her eyes were full. Why? Because the word 'immai', in this birth, raised a fear in her: if we shall not part in this birth, shall we part in the next? More than the joy of this moment, the worry of parting in births to come fills her heart.

This subtlety is tied to the Indian thought of rebirth. In a tradition that believes in many births, a vow for this birth alone is not enough; the lover's wish is to be united in every birth. She thinks that the hero, without knowing it, has made a lesser promise.

Here the sulk comes not in the form of anger but in the form of tears. This is the gentlest stage of a sulk. Tears are not an accusation but an expression of longing.

Commentators take this as the hero marvelling to his friend or to himself. The verse also teaches that when love deepens, it raises the wish to endure beyond the limit of time. The single word 'immai' turns the whole feeling here; without it his promise would have ended as simple comfort. The verse shows that a small part of a word can change its meaning.

A story

Savitri's Tears

This is a part of the account of Savitri and Satyavan told in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Here we tell its idea with respect. Some details vary from tradition to tradition.

Savitri, daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra, chose Satyavan, who lived in the forest, as her husband. The sage Narada warned, 'Satyavan is of good character, but his life will end within a year.' Savitri did not change her choice; she married him and began to live with him in the forest.

Through that whole year Savitri carried that secret in her heart. Satyavan accepted her loving conduct and the simplicity of forest life with joy. One day, his heart softened, he said, 'Savitri, in this birth we shall never part.' Savitri's eyes filled with tears. The day she knew of was drawing near; his word gave her not comfort but a deep pain.

Later, when Satyavan went to cut wood, Savitri went with him. There he fell weary, and Yama came and took his life away, says the Mahabharata. By her firmness Savitri followed Yama and, by his grace, won back her husband's life.

Satyavan did not understand Savitri's tears that day. 'I said a sweet word; why do you weep?' he wondered. Without revealing her secret, Savitri said only, 'Your love has filled my heart.' Her true fear remained within her. As time went on he came to feel the meaning of those tears, and readers of the tale may feel it fully once he is restored to life.

In this story the depth of the phrase 'in this birth we shall not part' is seen. It shows that if love is true, it contains the fear of parting too. The tears that Valluvar's verse shows blossomed here as the firmness of love.
