Srimad Bhagavatam, Eighth CantoThe Appearance of Dhanvantari
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Eighth Canto. The gods and asuras churned the ocean of milk, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Many things arose from it: the halahala poison, the wish-granting cow, Lakshmi and more.
At last a radiant figure rose from the sea holding a pot of nectar. He was Dhanvantari, an aspect of Vishnu and the father of Ayurveda. Along with the nectar that sustains life, he brought the world the knowledge that prevents disease and keeps the body well.
To this day Dhanvantari is worshipped as the god of medicine. Living healthily and giving disease no opening is itself a way of honouring that grace.
