Meaning

My Mother, who makes us truly understand all the sixty-four arts, has a form like pure crystal. She dwells inside my heart, and so no sorrow can come here.

Explanation

The verse begins like a prayer and ends with a certainty. Tradition counts sixty-four arts: letters, music, painting, dance, medicine, the study of the stars and many more. Kalaimagal makes us understand them 'eya', fittingly, as they truly are. What she gives is not mere information but knowledge that sees a thing as it is.

Her form is pure crystal. A crystal shows what is before it without a stain, and it shines by itself. When such a one lives in the heart, the heart too becomes clear as crystal. Where there is no darkness, how can sorrow enter? The closing words, 'ingu vaaraadhu idar', 'sorrow will not come here', are not only the poet's faith; they are a comfort spoken over every child who begins to learn.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10

Sixty-Four Arts in Sixty-Four Days

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. After Kamsa was overthrown, Krishna and Balarama went to the hermitage of the sage Sandipani at Avanti to study. They who are the teachers of all the worlds sat humbly at a teacher's feet and served him as pupils.

They learned everything after hearing it only once. The Bhagavatam says that in sixty-four days they mastered all the sixty-four arts. When their studies were done, they asked what fee they could offer their teacher. The sage and his wife asked for their son, who had drowned in the sea. Krishna went all the way to the realm of Yama and brought the boy back to them.

In stories like this the tradition of sixty-four arts took root. And the sight of God himself learning with humility shows what a learner needs first of all.

To reflect on

Which art would you love to learn? Could you take one small, humble step towards it today?
