Mahabharata, Shanti ParvaHayagriva Brings Back the Vedas
From the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata. At the end of a great deluge Brahma, seated on the lotus from Vishnu's navel, began to create the world again, with the Vedas as his guide. Then from two drops of water on a lotus leaf arose two asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha. They snatched the Vedas from Brahma and hid in the depths of the ocean.
Without the Vedas Brahma could create nothing. He prayed to Vishnu. Vishnu took the form of Hayagriva, with the head of a horse, went down to the ocean floor and sang the sweet chant of the Sama Veda. While the asuras were lost in the music, he took up the Vedas, brought them back to Brahma, and later overcame the asuras.
That is why Hayagriva is worshipped as a god of learning and wisdom, and students still recite the hymn that begins 'Jnanananda mayam devam'. The story shows that without the Veda there is no creation, and Kambar's verse says the same.
