Skanda Purana and the Adhyatma Ramayana traditionThe Hunter Ratnakara Becomes a Sage
From the Puranic tradition. A hunter named Ratnakara robbed travellers on a forest road to feed his family. One day he stopped the sage Narada. Narada asked him calmly, 'Will your family share in the sin of what you do? Go home and ask them.'
The hunter went home and asked. 'We eat what you bring,' they said, 'but your sin is your own.' In a moment the darkness in his mind lifted. He went back and fell at Narada's feet. Narada taught him the name of Rama. Unable even to say it properly, he began repeating 'mara, mara', and it turned into 'Rama, Rama'.
He sat so still in penance that an anthill, valmika, rose around him. From it rose the sage Valmiki. When the light of a holy name enters a dark mind, even a robber becomes the first of poets. That is the 'sunlight for the thick darkness of the mind' that Kambar sings of.
