Koothanur temple traditionOttakoothar and the Goddess of Koothanur
From the tradition of Koothanur. In Kambar's own time the Chola court had another great poet, Ottakoothar, who served three Chola kings and sang the Moovarula and other works. He was a fervent devotee of the Goddess of learning.
Tradition says the king rewarded his learning with a village on the bank of the Arasalar river, which came to be called Koothanur after him. There, it is said, Ottakoothar raised a temple to the Goddess he worshipped. Today Koothanur is one of the very few places in Tamil Nadu with a temple dedicated to Saraswathi alone.
On Vijayadasami thousands of children begin their letters there, and students lay their pens before her before examinations. One poet's devotion became a temple of stone. The dwelling place Kambar names, 'the minds of those who adorn her feet with flowers', grows in this way into a village and a shrine.
