Mundaka UpanishadWhat Is It That, Once Known, Makes All Known?
From the Mundaka Upanishad. Shaunaka, a great householder, went in the proper way to the sage Angiras with fuel-sticks in his hand, bowed and asked: 'Revered sir, what is it which, once known, makes all this known?'
Angiras replied: 'There are two kinds of knowledge to be known, the higher and the lower. The Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas, phonetics, ritual, grammar, etymology, metre and astronomy are the lower knowledge. The higher is that by which the Imperishable is known.'
Then he gave an image: 'As a spider sends out its thread and draws it back, as plants spring from the earth, so this world comes forth from the Imperishable.' Both levels of the learning the Goddess gives are here: the arts, and the wisdom beyond them. The state Kambar describes, 'the heart grows clear and opens out completely', is that higher knowledge.
