Explanation

This verse is wordplay, but deep wordplay. The poet calls the white lotus on which the Goddess sits an 'agam', a home, in four ways: the foremost home among flowers; the home where the bliss of wisdom lives; the home that changes the home of birth that evil deeds bring; and the mother's home for every living being.

The last two matter most. Our deeds build us a body, a birth, as a 'home' to live in. The wisdom the Goddess gives frees us from that house. Yet she is not stern: her lotus is 'thaayagam', a mother's home for all, the house any child can always come back to.

Mahabharata, Shanti Parva (the Hamsa Gita)

The Counsel of the Swan

From the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, a story Bhishma told Yudhishthira from his bed of arrows. Once the Sadhyas, a class of gods, were wandering the world when they saw a golden swan, who Bhishma says was the unborn Brahma himself. They asked it, 'We hear you are very wise. What is the way to liberation?'

The swan said: 'Austerity, self-control, truth and calm of mind are the way. If someone speaks harshly to you, do not answer harshly. One who holds back anger gains even the merit of the one who wronged him. Speak no lie; do not rejoice in another's pain. One who has untied the knots of the heart is bound in no house.'

The swan, which can separate milk from water, is the Goddess's mount. The discernment that tells good from evil is the wisdom she gives, and that discernment becomes 'the home that makes the house built by evil deeds fall away'.

To reflect on

If someone speaks harshly to you today, could you answer without harshness?
