Nandikeshvara Kashika traditionGrammar Born from Nataraja's Drum
From the tradition of the grammarians. One day Lord Shiva danced his dance of bliss. The sages Sanaka and his brothers, Patanjali, Vyaghrapada and Panini stood around and watched. At the end of the dance the Lord sounded his little drum fourteen times.
Each sage heard in that sound what he needed. Panini heard in the fourteen beats fourteen groups of letters: 'a i un, ri lri k...'. These are the Maheshvara Sutras, and on them he built the Ashtadhyayi, the foundation of Sanskrit grammar. Nandikeshvara heard in the same sounds the meaning of the Vedanta.
One sound: for one, grammar; for another, wisdom. The paths differ, but the source is one. When Kambar sings of 'the bindu and nada which as the form of wisdom fill all things', it is this primal sound he means.
