Krittivasi Ramayana (Bengali tradition)The Hundred and Eighth Blue Lotus
From the Ramayana sung in Bengali by Krittivasa in the fifteenth century. Before the battle with Ravana, Rama sought the Goddess's blessing and worshipped Durga in autumn. She was usually worshipped in spring, so this was a worship awakened out of season, the Akal Bodhan.
The worship called for a hundred and eight blue lotuses, and Hanuman brought them with great effort. But when Rama counted them at the end, one was missing; the Goddess had hidden it to test him. Rama was dismayed, and then he thought, 'They call me lotus-eyed. My eyes too are blue lotuses.' He raised an arrow to pluck out his own eye as the offering.
At that moment the Goddess appeared, caught his hand and gave him the boon of victory. The Durga Puja of Bengal remembers this event. The poet's image of eyes as lotuses becomes, in this story, a devotion that would offer life itself. Kambar's opening words, 'the dark lotus is her eye', bring it to mind.
