Explanation

The first invocation spoke of the Goddess's grace; the second tells us how to worship her. The poet recalls her form piece by piece: crystal colour, coral lips, lotus hands, a waist like the little tudi drum. Holding these in the mind, one must praise her 'allum pagalum anavaradhamum', night and day, without ceasing. Not one day of worship, but every day, without a break.

And if one does? 'Kallum sollaadho kavi!' A stone has no feeling and no voice. If even a stone would sing verse, what wonder if a human being sings? For anyone who feels slow at learning or shy of speaking, this line gives great hope. Where effort and devotion come together, nothing is impossible.

Life of Kumaraguruparar, Kashi tradition

Sakalakalavalli Malai and the Court at Kashi

From the traditional life of Kumaraguruparar. Kumaraguruparar was born at Thiruvaikuntam in the seventeenth century and did not speak until he was five. By the grace of Murugan of Thiruchendur he found his voice and became a great poet. Later he travelled to Kashi to spread the Shaiva faith.

To found a monastery at Kashi he had to go before the ruler's court, but he did not know the Hindustani spoken there. So he sang ten verses to Kalaimagal, the Sakalakalavalli Malai, which begins: 'Is the cool lotus of my white heart not fit to bear your feet, as the white lotus does?'

Tradition says that by the Goddess's grace he then spoke that language fluently. The ruler was amazed and gave land for the monastery. A child who once could not speak at all now spoke even in a new tongue by Kalaimagal's grace. Could there be a better witness to Kambar's line, 'Will not even a stone speak poetry?'

To reflect on

Is there something you gave up on, saying 'it is not for me'? What might happen if you gave it a little time every day?
