Padma Purana, Srishti KhandaWhere the Lotus Fell: Pushkar
From the Padma Purana. Brahma, the Creator, wished to perform a great sacrifice on earth. To find the right place for it, he let fall the lotus he held in his hand. The flower touched the earth in three places, and in each place clear water welled up and became a lake. Because the flower, pushpa, fell from his hand, kara, the place was called Pushkara.
There Brahma held his sacrifice. It is the town of Pushkar in present-day Rajasthan, home to one of the very few temples of Brahma, with a shrine of Goddess Savitri on the hill nearby.
A lotus dropped from the Creator's hand gave rise to holy waters and a place of worship. In Kambar's verse the lotus works the same way: each lotus is a holy place, and the poet's own heart is one of them.
