Ninrana ninrana nillaa enavunarnthu / Onrina onrina vallae seyinseyka / Senrana senrana vaazhnaal seruththutan / Vanthathu vanthathu koorru.

Meaning

Understand that whatever stands now will not stand, and do the good you mean to do at once, one thing after another. The days gone are gone; life is being cut short; and death comes along with every day that arrives.

Explanation

The repetition in the Tamil, standing-standing-will-not-stand, sounds like a rhythm: the noise of things breaking one after another. What follows is not renunciation but urgency. The only command here is: do not postpone the good.

That death arrives with every day is meant to wake us, not to frighten us. Every time we say tomorrow, one day is already gone.

The Mahabharata, Vana Parva

The Moment Savitri Stood

From the Mahabharata. Savitri knew that Satyavan, the man she had chosen, had only a year to live, and she married him anyway. On the last day of that year he collapsed with a splitting pain while gathering wood, and Yama came with his noose.

Savitri did not weep and did not wait. She followed Yama at once, answered his questions with such intelligence that he was forced to grant her boons, and won Satyavan's life back. Had she postponed even for a moment, everything would have ended.
