Meaning

Name: O green emerald parrot, speak in great words as though granting me, a sinner, the alms of yoga. Sing of her as Bharata Mata, who set up in this world the lamp of her perfect great wisdom.

Land: O honey-tongued parrot, tell of the golden land of that goddess who is bliss itself. Know that the land stretching from the vast Himalaya that touches the sky down to Kanyakumari is the Aryan land, Bharat.

City: O sweet-lisping green parrot, which is the city where she who is our life dwells in goodness? It is the holy ground of Kashi, which is said to be the nectar of the great ones who have known that the Self alone is.

River: O coloured parrot, she who protects without harm those who recite 'Vande Mataram' - speak of her river. Bless it as the Ganga come down from heaven, which turns every road one travels for good into gold with dharma.

Mountain: O green parrot of the grove, tell of the mountain of her who holds the four ancient Vedas. One thing among all the mountains of the world has no equal, and raises its crown to the sky: a golden thing, the white mountain.

Vehicle: of her who has countless riches of dignity, renown and honour, speak the mount she rides. She is not one to ride on a chariot horse: she rides on the lion that the whole world fears.

Army: O parrot, when she rises blazing in the form of compassion, tell me what army it is that fells the enemy host. It does not fall on those who fight it through softness; and if it does fall, rising again is hard. Know it as the firm thunderbolt from the sky.

Drum: O beloved emerald, tell of the drum that swells its sound in the courtyard of the Mother's shrine. It sounds the words 'speak truth, do dharma' and grants liberation: that drum is the Vedas.

Garland: come, O young parrot, tell of the jewelled garland she puts on, she who never gives sorrow to those who bow to her. She who turns away the unyielding with a half-smile of sport shines wearing a garland of golden lotuses.

Banner: O parrot with a beak red as coral, what else is the victorious banner of her who puts an end to cunning and evil? It is the banner of unfailing diamond, shining so that the wicked who bow at the feet of the good are destroyed.

Explanation

Tasangam means the ten emblems of an old king: crown, land, city, river, mountain, mount, army, drum, garland and banner. Bharathiyar fits each of these ten emblems to the nation, so a whole political image shines through one song.

Each piece is set in a different raga - Kambhoji, Vasantha, Manirangu, Surutti, Kanada, Dhanyasi, Mukhari, Senchurutti, Pilahari, Kedaram. With the ten emblems and the ten ragas he also joins the Himalaya in the north and Kanyakumari in the south into one boundary. So this is not a hymn; it is a map of the heart.

Twice the song turns fierce: the army is the thunderbolt from the sky, the banner is diamond. A land of love carries a lotus in one hand and lightning in the other; that doubleness is a constant mark of Bharathiyar's idea of the nation.

To reflect on

Fitting the ten royal emblems to the nation turns the country into a king. How far is that image a fair one?
