Explanation

Commentators give two readings of the phrase 'oruththaatrum panpinaar kannum' in the first line. In one, it means even towards those who have the power to punish those who wronged them. In the other, even towards one whose nature is to punish without fail, to be gracious and forbearing. The idea is the same in both: to forgive without using the right and power one has to punish is the highest quality.

Patience is not weakness. For one without power, forbearance is compulsion; for one with power, forbearance is magnanimity. That is why Valluvar says 'thalai', the foremost quality. One may punish the wrongdoer, yet by not punishing he gives him a chance to mend. That kindness often brings a stronger change than punishment. One subdued by punishment will resist when the chance comes; one changed by forgiveness will remain grateful all his life.

We must also remember its limit. The previous verse said duty must be guarded. So forbearance does not mean ignoring every offence; it means generously forgiving a harm done to oneself personally. One whose duty is to protect public dharma cannot give that up.

In daily life, how far we can forgive beyond enmity and revenge is the touchstone of our character.

A story

Draupadi Spares Ashwatthama

From the Mahabharata: at the end of the Kurukshetra war the Pandava army had won. That night Ashwatthama, son of Dronacharya, enraged at his father's killing by deceit, entered the Pandava camp and killed the five sons of Draupadi and other warriors as they slept. It seemed that the Pandava line itself had been wiped out.

Draupadi, having lost her sons, was sunk in great grief. Arjuna, with Krishna's help, went in search of Ashwatthama, caught him and brought him. He also removed the jewel that Ashwatthama had on his forehead from birth. Then they brought him bound to the camp.

On seeing the killer, Bhima's anger flared. 'He must be killed at once,' he said. Others thought the same. But Draupadi's stance was different. She looked at Ashwatthama. According to tradition she said, 'The son of our teacher should not be killed. If you kill him, his mother Kripi will be grieved over her son as I am. I will not give that sorrow to another woman.'

Hearing her, the others calmed a little. In the end the jewel on Ashwatthama's forehead was taken, and the story goes that, disgraced without it, he was cursed to wander the forests for a long time. Only his life was spared.

At the height of her sorrow, Draupadi thought of the grief of the mother of the one who had harmed her. Her forgiving nature is a magnificent example of 'poruththaatrum panpe thalai'. Yet we must notice that the consequence of the crime he committed was not removed.
