Explanation

Women line their eyes with kohl and wear ornaments for beauty. Valluvar says here that the true ornament of the eye is not the kohl applied from outside but the kindness that shines from the heart. No make-up can give a more beautiful eye than a gentle look. Eyes in which love plays look beautiful though small; eyes without kindness, though large, chill the onlooker.

The second line carries a stern comparison: without it, the eye is a 'pun', a sore. A sore gives pain, one keeps away from touching it, and it brings revulsion and fear to the viewer. The glance of an unkind eye pricks us, and a kind of pain spreads where it is. This is evidence that Valluvar does not shrink from making his similes harsh when needed. Some explain 'pun enru unarappadum' as 'will be felt only as something that gives pain like a wound'.

In today's world we see this with our own eyes. The money spent in beauty parlours is beyond measure, but a smile and an affectionate look are make-up that no amount of money can buy. What makes us remember a person is not the clothes he wears but the look he gives. So before seeking ornaments we may beautify our gaze.

A story

The Eyes of Kannappa

From the Periya Puranam: in the forest hills of Kalahasti lived a hunter chief named Thinnan, whose work was hunting. One day while hunting he came upon a Shiva linga worshipped as Kudumithevar. His heart melted at the sight. Though a hunter by birth, in love he became a devotee of the Lord. Not knowing how to worship, he tasted the meat he had hunted and offered the sweeter portions to the Lord. He brought river water in his mouth for the ablution and plucked flowers from his own head to adorn him.

There lived there a Brahmin priest, Sivagocharyar, who performed daily worship in the Vedic way. He grieved at seeing his pure worship being defiled. But that night Shiva appeared in his dream and said, 'His love is pure worship to me. Watch from hiding tomorrow.'

The next day, when Sivagocharyar watched from hiding, he saw blood flowing from an eye of the Lord. Thinnan, seeing it, was in agony. He applied herbs but the blood did not stop. Without hesitation he gouged out one of his own eyes with the tip of his arrow and set it in the place of the linga's eye. The blood stopped. But when he saw blood flowing from the other eye also, he determined to take out his second eye.

To mark the spot he placed his foot on the linga's eye. As he began to take out the second eye, the Lord stopped him, says the Purana, calling, 'Stay, Kannappa, stay.' From that day he was honoured as Kannappa Nayanar.

Is there any greater proof that the ornament of the eye is compassion and not kohl? Kannappar's eyes throbbed at the suffering of another; that very tenderness made them an undying ornament.
