Explanation

This verse divides firmness in action into two parts: before beginning and after beginning. Before beginning, the wise examine whether the work can succeed and set aside what cannot. After beginning, they continue without faltering at the obstacles that come. Only when both are present is the action truly firm.

Commentators differ on the word 'oororal'. Some take it as guarding beforehand against obstacles. Others take it as setting aside work that is harmful or unachievable. In both readings the message is the same: caution at the start, firmness in the continuing.

The verse also clears up a common misunderstanding. Firmness is not starting anything blindly. To enter a work that cannot succeed and then claim to be firm is ignorance. The way of the examined mind is to weigh first, and then stand without wavering.

A practical test follows from this. Before a start, ask 'what could stop this, and can I meet it?' After the start, ask only 'what is the next step?' Questions of the first kind belong to the planning table; questions of the second kind belong to the field.

Before opening a new shop, a person should weigh the location, the capital and the demand. After opening it, he should not shut it in fear at the losses of the first months. That is the practical meaning. Between haste and fear, this verse shows a clear path.

A story

Hanuman Crosses the Ocean

The Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana tells how Hanuman crossed the sea. The vanaras who went in search of Sita stood on the southern shore. When the question arose of who could cross a sea a hundred yojanas wide, Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his own strength. Hanuman realised his power, climbed Mount Mahendra, and rose into the air remembering Rama.

He had examined beforehand whether the task could be done. He set out knowing that his bodily strength, the name of Rama, and the needed skill were all present. Then obstacles came on the way. In mid-sea the mountain Mainaka rose and lovingly invited him: 'Rest a little and go on.' Hanuman touched it respectfully and bowed, saying, 'There is no rest until Rama's work is done,' and went on.

Next Surasa, mother of the nagas, came to swallow him; he overcame her by wit and moved ahead. Then he overcame the demoness Simhika, who seized shadows and dragged creatures down, and reached Lanka. There he saw Sita, gave her the message, and returned.

On returning, the message he brought gave courage to the whole vanara host.

Both parts of the verse appear here. He first examined whether it could be done; after beginning he did not waver at the invitations to rest or at the threats. To begin after examination and finish without faltering is the doctrine of the wise.

To reflect on

Did I examine before beginning, and do I stay steady at the obstacles after beginning?
