Explanation

The opening verse points straight at the root of success. Victory in an undertaking does not come from the strength of hands or the number of troops, but from the firmness of the doer's mind. With that firmness a person finds wealth, helpers and opportunity; without it, even abundant resources leave the work stalled halfway.

In 'matraiya ellam pira' Valluvar does not reject the rest; he places it second. Tools, wealth and learning are needed. But the force that moves them is firmness of will. A farmer may have good land and bullocks, but if he lacks the resolve to keep sowing when drought comes, there is no harvest.

Among commentators, Parimelazhagar and others explain 'thitpam' as not faltering until the work begun is completed. Some add a subtle point: firmness of mind is resolve joined to clear understanding, not mere stubbornness. The two readings go together: resolve must come with clarity.

In today's life, for a student preparing for an examination, a young person starting a venture, or someone recovering from illness, inner resolve is the first support, ahead of outside help. It does not arrive in one day; it grows by practising, in small matters, doing what one has said. So the verse tells us: train the mind first; the rest follows.

A story

Savitri's Resolve

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells the story of Savitri and Satyavan. Savitri, daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra, chose for herself Satyavan, son of the blind king Dyumatsena who lived in the forest. The sage Narada came and warned: 'He is good, but his life ends one year from today.' Her father asked her to find another groom. Savitri firmly refused: 'Once chosen, the mind does not change.'

After the marriage she accepted a simple forest life and tended her parents-in-law. As the appointed day neared, she kept a three-day fast. On that day Satyavan went to cut wood and she went with him. He lay down with a headache and died in her lap. Yama, lord of dharma, bound his soul and carried it away.

Savitri followed. Yama told her to turn back; she kept walking, speaking gently of dharma. Pleased, Yama granted boons: her father-in-law's eyesight, his lost kingdom, and many sons for her father. After each boon she continued to follow. At last Yama granted, 'Let a hundred sons be born to you.' She asked, 'How can this happen without my husband?' Bound by his own word, Yama released Satyavan's life.

Savitri had no sword and no army. What she had was firmness of mind. Even before death she did not waver and spoke clearly. This is what Valluvar calls 'manaththitpam'.

Do I practise doing what I say in small matters, so my mind stands firm at the big moment?
