Explanation

This verse speaks of secrecy in action. The word 'kadaikkotka' suggests keeping the purpose held within until the end. Valluvar says it is the skill of the doer to carry out a worthy undertaking without declaring its purpose until it is complete.

The reason is clear. If a plan becomes known midway to those who oppose, envy, or obstruct, they will interfere. The trouble then is 'erra vizhumam', hardship not easily removed. A work revealed only once finished cannot be stopped by anyone.

It is important to note that the verse does not endorse lying or deceit. It must be read together with the previous chapter's call for purity. What it speaks of is carrying out a well-intended work quietly until the proper time. Some commentators say it applies especially to a king's war plans; others say it is general for all works.

Silence here is not cunning but economy: a mind that spends its energy on announcing a work has less left to do it, and the wise keep their strength for the deed.

In today's life, when someone starts a new invention, venture or examination effort, showing the result brings more benefit than talking to everyone about it beforehand. That is what is meant here by skill in action.

A story

The Pandavas in Hiding

The Virata Parva of the Mahabharata tells of the Pandavas' year in hiding. Having lost at dice, the Pandavas lived twelve years in the forest. In the thirteenth year they had to live unrecognised; if discovered, they would have to go back to the forest for another twelve years. Yudhishthira resolved to keep the condition firmly.

They tied their weapons in a shami tree and hid them, and the five brothers and Draupadi joined the household of King Virata in different roles. Yudhishthira served as Kanka, a companion at dice; Bhima as Vallabha the cook; Arjuna as Brihannala, dance teacher to the princess; Nakula and Sahadeva as keepers of horses and cattle; and Draupadi as the maid Sairandhri.

Throughout that year they did not reveal their strength. When Kichaka harassed Draupadi, Bhima destroyed him in secret, and even then did not reveal himself. Only at the year's close, when the Kauravas raided the king's cattle, did Arjuna take up his bow and defeat the raiders. By then the year was complete.

For that year each of them held back his special skill and changed speech and manner to suit the new role; enemy spies searched and could not know them.

Keeping the plan hidden until its end allowed the Pandavas to be revealed in peace. Had they been exposed midway, a return to the forest, a hardship not easily removed, would have followed. This is 'erra vizhumam'.

To reflect on

Do I waste my good efforts by talking about them, or do I show them once done?
