Explanation

A sesame seed is very small. A piece obtained by splitting it is smaller still. Valluvar warns that even when inner enmity is that tiny, ruin is contained in it. 'Ullathaang kedu' means the ruin is already there, held within.

The small split may be a word-quarrel, a slight insult or an unspoken bitterness. It is natural to ignore it saying "it is nothing." But the verse faults that very neglect.

As a tree lies within a seed, great ruin lies within a small rift. It has the nature of growing by itself; as a small crack widens and brings down a wall, bitterness too grows with time.

This verse is not for frightening but for awakening. It also holds the hope that a small rift can be closed easily. So it is wise to settle it at the start with an apology, an explanation or an embrace.

In today's relationships, what we dismiss as a 'small matter' often becomes a big crack. Recognising the small rifts in our lives and mending them lovingly is the use of this verse. Seen this way, giving way in small matters is the cheapest insurance a family can buy. Small acts of care turn into great protection with time.

A story

The Fall of the Yadavas

The destruction of the Yadava clan is told in the Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata and in the Bhagavata Purana. Krishna ruled the Yadavas at Dwaraka. They were rich and strong; but victory and pride filled them.

The young Yadavas dressed Krishna's son Samba as a pregnant woman, took him to the sages, and mockingly asked, "What will she give birth to?" The sages, angered, cursed: "From his belly will be born an iron pestle, and it will destroy your clan." From Samba an iron pestle was born. They ground it down and threw it into the sea. Its particles grew on the shore as reeds.

Many years later the Yadavas gathered at the holy place of Prabhasa and drank. Satyaki and Kritavarman had a slight argument about an old event of the battlefield. Satyaki mocked Kritavarman. The words grew.

Satyaki cut off Kritavarman's head. Seeing this, their supporters split into two camps. With no weapons, they pulled up the reeds on the shore; these turned into iron rods. Fathers struck sons, brothers struck brothers.

Within a few hours the Yadava clan perished fighting among themselves. Krishna and Balarama beheld the scene with grief.

A small quarrel grew large enough to destroy a great clan. The Yadavas whom no outer enemy could conquer perished by their inner enmity. It recalls the verse 'etpakavu anna sirumaiththE aayinum utpakai ullathaang kEdu'.
