Explanation

This couplet compares two kinds of people. The first know the measure of their stomach and stop eating while there is still room. The second go on eating even after the stomach is full. Valluvar says that with the first, health stays like pleasure, and with the second, disease stays. The simile "inbam pol", like pleasure, shows health itself as a joy. To be well is to be happy, and measured food gives it.

The words "izhivu arindhu" are read in several ways. The old commentator Parimelazhagar takes it as knowing the empty place in the stomach, that is, stopping when there is still space left. This fits the practice mentioned above that a quarter of the stomach should remain empty. "Kazhiper iraiyaan" is the one who eats exceedingly. In Hindu tradition limitless craving and greed are seen as evil, and greed in food spreads to other parts of life.

Disease here may mean not only bodily illness but also sloth, dullness and distress. Health, like a guest, stays in the house of the measured; disease stays in the house of the immoderate. The message of the couplet is that the choice of the guest we welcome lies in our own hands. In the Tamil tradition of hospitality, pressing a guest to take a little more is a sign of love, yet true love also considers the guest's health.

A story

The Wedding Feast

This is an imagined tale; its setting is a wedding house in a village near Madurai.

In a village near Madurai the wedding of the daughter of a man named Ganavathi went on for three days. In the evening the groom's people, the bride's people and all relatives together ate the feast on banana leaves. Many dishes were served: sambar, rasam, payasam, vadai, appalam, poriyal and kootu. At that feast two brothers sat side by side: the elder, Sundaram, and the younger, Murugan.

Murugan enjoyed his food and ate slowly. When his stomach was three-quarters full, the server came with more vadai. "Enough, thank you," he refused with a smile. Sundaram, however, ate fast. "A little more rice," "one more vadai," "more payasam," he kept asking. Even after everything on his leaf was finished, he went on to eat more sweets.

By night Sundaram was writhing with stomach pain. There came vomiting and dizziness. The relatives took him to a nearby vaidya. On the next day, the third day's feast, he could not take part. Murugan, however, slept well all night, rose cheerfully in the morning and helped with the wedding rites.

The bride's grandmother noticed this. She said to Sundaram, "Dear, the feast is tasty, but the stomach has a limit too. Valluvar said: with one who eats in measure, health stays like pleasure; with one who eats beyond measure, disease stays." Sundaram bowed his head in shame. At the next wedding he learned to eat in measure like Murugan.
