Explanation

This couplet is the very life-breath of the chapter. Valluvar says one should eat again only after what was eaten before is fully digested. If a man follows this single habit, the body needs nothing that could be called medicine. One who eats again before digestion is complete has old and new food mixed in the stomach, and that confusion is the root of most diseases. The first medicine is therefore to eat at the right time.

In the phrase "potri unin" lies the sense of honouring food and eating with knowledge of its nature and of one's own body. In Hindu tradition food is equal to God. The Taittiriya Upanishad praises food itself as Brahman, "annam brahma". One who praises food, eats it with gratitude and at the time of hunger gets its full benefit. One who eats hurriedly or without attention loses it.

There is a practical lesson too. Hunger is a message from the body. When digestion is complete, hunger appears. A man who respects that message reduces his need for a physician. Some commentators take "marundu vendaavaam" to mean disease will not come, others that even minor existing ailments will pass. Either way the aim is the same: ordering food is the best medicine.

A story

Grandmother's Rule

This is an imagined tale; its setting is a Tamil family at the Pongal season in the month of Thai.

In a village near Tirunelveli lived Meenakshi Paati, eighty years old. She had never needed to go to a physician. On the day of Thai Pongal many relatives gathered at the house. There was a feast of sweet pongal, vadai, payasam and many curries. Her grandson Anandan ate at ten in the morning and filled his plate again at half past eleven.

"Stop, dear," said the grandmother. "Are you hungry?" Anandan said, "No, Paati, it is tasty." She smiled. "Taste is one thing, hunger another. Only when the earlier meal is digested comes the next mouthful. That is the rule of my life," she said. "This is what Valluvar said. One who eats so needs no medicine."

Anandan listened and asked, "How are you so lively even at eighty?" She said, "I wait till my stomach is empty. Before eating I think of God and set aside one handful of food. I eat slowly, tasting it, with gratitude. Only when hunger comes is it time for the next meal."

That evening Anandan's stomach felt heavy and uneasy. He remembered his grandmother's words. From the next day he learned to eat only after hunger came. In some months the frequent stomach pain he used to have went away. When the next Pongal came he told his younger brothers and sisters his grandmother's rule, and in that house the habit began of eating not for taste but for hunger and gratitude.

To reflect on

When did you last eat because you were hungry, and not because food was in front of you or it was time?
