Explanation

"Theeyalavu" is the measure of the digestive fire. The power in our body that digests food is like a fire, which Ayurveda calls jatharagni. That fire has a capacity. One who does not know its measure and puts in much more is like one who quenches the fire. If a heap of large logs is put on a small fire, it does not burn but dies. In the same way, food beyond the digestive power stays undigested in the stomach and opens the door to many diseases. In "noyalavu indri padum" there is the sense that diseases have no limit.

Valluvar speaks here not only of the amount of food but of the danger of not knowing one's own capacity. The word "theriyaan" points to ignorance. One who does not know his limit will stumble in any field. In the Ramayana, Kumbhakarna is regarded as the sign of limitless food and limitless sleep. Though the food he ate was like a mountain, there was no limit to his craving.

In life, too, taking on burdens beyond our strength does harm. So the couplet applies not only to food but to work, responsibility and desire. Knowing our strength and acting accordingly is wisdom.

In Hindu tradition jatharagni is the sacrificial fire burning in the body. The Bhagavad Gita (15.14) also says that the Lord, as Vaishvanara, the fire of digestion, dwells in bodies and digests food. Eating is thus a sacrifice, and as one offers oblations in measure, so should food be offered.

A story

Kumbhakarna

The story of Kumbhakarna comes in the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. He was Ravana's younger brother, of immense size and strength. Tradition says that when he did tapas and was about to ask Brahma for a boon, Sarasvati settled on his tongue and made him ask for deep sleep, "nidravatva". As a result he slept six months, woke for one day, and slept again.

When the war with Rama was on, Ravana's forces suffered many losses. Ravana ordered Kumbhakarna to be awakened. However hard they tried, he would not wake. They let elephants walk over him and made great noise. At last he rose. The first thing he asked for when he rose was food. Ravana's attendants placed before him a mountain of food and many jars of drink. He finished all of it.

Only after he had eaten did he understand his brother's situation. Hearing that Ravana had abducted Sita, Kumbhakarna opposed it and advised his brother: "Brother, what you did is wrong; return Sita to Rama." But Ravana did not listen. Out of attachment to his brother, Kumbhakarna went to war.

He wrought great destruction on the battlefield. At last he fell to Rama's arrow. There is a lesson in his story: limitless sleep and limitless food made a great part of his life useless. One who did not know his own capacity and spent his time and strength in boundless pleasures gave good counsel in the end yet could not carry it out. The tale recalls the limitless suffering that comes to one who eats without measure.
