Explanation

This couplet states the basic doctrine of the medical texts. That three humours, vali, pitta and kapha, sustain the body's working is the view of both Siddha medicine and Ayurveda. Vata or vali governs movement and breath; pitta runs heat and digestion; kapha preserves the body's coolness and firmness. When the three stand in balance, the body is healthy. Whichever of them increases or decreases brings disease, says Valluvar, citing the testimony of the learned with the word "noolor".

Valluvar does not here invent a new theory. He cites with due respect an idea from the older medical works, and the couplet shows his humility and knowledge together. The phrase "miginum kuraiyinum" points to both extremes: harm in excess and harm in deficiency. That also becomes a general lesson for life. Balance and the middle way bring well-being. In eating, sleeping, working and resting alike, too much and too little both do harm.

In Hindu tradition the Bhagavad Gita (6.17) speaks of one moderate in food and recreation, for whom yoga destroys sorrow. Some commentators take the three as vata, pitta and shleshma, while others say it reflects a Siddha addition made after the couplet's time. In any case, the central message is that balance is health.

A story

The Pulse of the Kumbakonam Vaidya

This is an imagined tale; its setting is a traditional vaidya house in Kumbakonam.

In Kumbakonam, near the Mahamaham tank, Muthusami Vaidyar ran his dispensary. He had learnt Siddha medicine in the line of his forefathers. One day Govindan, a forty-year-old weaver, came to find him. He complained of long-standing body ache and a burning like an ulcer in the stomach. He ate very spicy food every day and sat late at night weaving at his loom.

The vaidya took his hand and felt the pulse. "Your pitta is high. That is why the burning comes. But with the night wakefulness your vali is also disturbed. Both must be balanced," he said. Govindan was amazed and said, "Sir, write me a medicine." The vaidya smiled. "Medicine is secondary. First bring your food and sleep within measure. Remember what Valluvar said, that all three, vali, pitta and kapha, bring disease when they exceed or fall short."

He advised a small herbal decoction and a simple diet of buttermilk and cucumber. He told Govindan to sleep before ten at night. Govindan thought it easy at first. But within two weeks the burning lessened. In a month the body ache vanished. He went again to the vaidya to thank him.

"What I gave you was not a medicine but a measure. Your own body is your physician," said the vaidya. Govindan wove at his loom only by day, and for the rest of his life kept that measured way of living.
