Marundhu

This chapter teaches how diet keeps disease away and how a physician should find and cure illness when it comes. One who eats in measure after the earlier meal is digested needs no medicine, and healing rests on four together: the patient, the physician, the medicine and the attendant.

Introduction

The chapter on Medicine belongs to the Porutpaal, in the section on Friendship. Valluvar states here the truth that bodily health is the basis of all wealth. Hindu tradition holds that to attain the four purusharthas, dharma, artha, kama and moksha, one must be healthy. The old saying "sharira madyam khalu dharma sadhanam" declares that the body is the first instrument for doing dharma. That is why Valluvar gave the knowledge of guarding health a chapter of its own.

The central message is simple: one who eats in measure after the previous meal is digested needs no medicine at all. The first couplet says that the three humours of the sages, vali, pitta and kapha (vata, pitta and kapha), cause disease whenever they exceed or fall short. This is the basic doctrine in both the Siddha and the Ayurvedic traditions. The next seven couplets treat diet: when to eat, how much, what kind of food is suitable, and what happens if one eats too much. The last two couplets describe the physician's duty and the four limbs of treatment.

In the Vedic tradition medicine is a divine calling. The Bhagavata Purana says that when the ocean of milk was churned, Dhanvantari arose holding the pot of nectar, and he is the god of medicine. The Ashvins are the physicians of the gods, and Charaka and Sushruta composed the ancient medical treatises. In Tamil Nadu the Siddhars such as Agastya developed Siddha medicine. Valluvar's couplets are in harmony with these traditions.

Some commentators see the chapter as mere health notes, others as teaching that dietary restraint is itself a great virtue. In any case, three habits are indispensable for a good life: eating according to hunger, the knowledge to search out the root of illness, and trust in the physician. A reader may quietly look at his own daily eating habit once, and that is the real use of this chapter.

Tamil has the saying that food is medicine and medicine is food. In his Tirumantiram, Tirumular, saying that the Lord dwells within the body, honoured the body as a temple. One who sees the body as a temple will not put into it unsuitable food or food beyond measure.

Chapter story

Dhanvantari and the Pot of Nectar

The Bhagavata Purana tells the story of the churning of the ocean of milk in its eighth skandha. By the curse of the sage Durvasa, Indra and the gods lost their strength and wealth, and the asuras defeated them. The gods took refuge in Vishnu. Vishnu guided them: "Churn the ocean of milk together with the asuras, and you will get nectar." With Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope, the devas and asuras began to churn. When the mountain sank into the sea, Vishnu, in the form of the tortoise Kurma, bore it on his back.

After a thousand years of churning, many treasures arose from the sea: the cow Kamadhenu, the elephant Airavata, the horse Uchchaihshravas, the wishing tree, and the goddess Lakshmi. Before them, from Vasuki's mouth the deadly poison Halahala surged up. When it began to burn the world, Lord Shiva drank it and held it in his throat. From that day he was called Neelakanta. When the poison was done, Dhanvantari appeared last of all.

Dhanvantari came holding the pot of nectar in one hand and, in others, the medical science of Ayurveda and healing herbs. The Purana calls him an amsha of Vishnu. The nectar reached the gods, and drinking it they regained their strength. But Dhanvantari's greater gift to the world was not only nectar but the knowledge that cures disease. Tradition also says he was born as a king of Kashi and taught medicine to disciples such as Sushruta.

There is a subtlety in this tale. Poison came before nectar. One who wishes to obtain good in life must first know the evil as well. Food may be nectar, yet beyond measure it becomes poison. The tale shows the subtlety Valluvar describes, that food eaten in measure turns to nectar and food in excess to poison. And since the knowledge of healing is regarded as a divine gift, it is clear that the physician deserves honour.

In many places the worship of Dhanvantari continues, and some Vaishnava temples have a separate shrine for him. Physicians have the custom of bowing to Dhanvantari before beginning their work, and in North India he is worshipped on Dhanteras, two days before Deepavali. The tale reminds us that a healthy body is itself nectar.

When the nectar was won, the asuras tried to seize it. A quarrel arose between devas and asuras. Then Vishnu took the form of the beautiful woman Mohini, turned the asuras' attention away, and distributed the nectar to the gods. This too teaches that life-saving medicine in greedy hands may serve evil, so healing knowledge belongs in righteous hands.
