Explanation

This verse also stresses the idea of the previous one, but the simile changes. Valluvar says that not understanding the heart of one who has sulked is equal to cutting the very root of a creeper that is already withered. If a creeper has withered, a little water will make it sprout again. But if the root itself is cut, it cannot recover. The creeper of love withers a little through the sulk; at that time the embrace and a kind word are its water. To stand without understanding is the act of cutting the root.

The word 'unaraamai' is the main one here. He does not say not embracing or not speaking, but not understanding. The fault is that the hero has not grasped in his heart the longing within her sulk. Love lies not in mere action but in understanding.

'Valli' means a creeper, and 'mudhal' means root. To cut the root of a withered creeper is the extreme of wrongly hurting someone. Commentators take it as the cruelty of the hero's neglecting the sulk without noticing it.

Even today, to brush aside someone's silence or irritation as 'just a mood' shakes the very root of the relationship. A little attention and a little comfort will make that root green again.

A story

Paravai's Sulk and the Lord's Mission

This is part of the life of Sundarar as Sekkizhar tells it in the Periya Puranam. Here we give its idea briefly and with respect.

Sundaramoorthi Nayanar, who lived at Tiruvarur, married Paravai Nachiyar. The two lived a household life with love. Later, when Sundarar went to Tiruvotriyur, he saw Sangiliyar there and married her, says the Purana. The same tradition says that because he left the town in breach of a promise given to Sangiliyar, he lost his eyesight.

When he returned to Tiruvarur, this news reached Paravai Nachiyar. She sulked greatly. She shut the door. Sundarar stood at the entrance and grieved. Her sulk was like a withered creeper, and he could not soothe it.

Sundarar asked his friend, Lord Shiva, to go as a messenger. The Periya Puranam says that the Lord went twice by night to Paravai's house and spoke to her on Sundarar's behalf. Devotees honour this as the great grace of the Lord who went on a mission for his devotee. In the end Paravai's sulk was soothed.

Sundarar, it is said, never again treated Paravai's sulk lightly, and the whole of Tiruvarur marvelled that the Lord himself would go to soothe a sulk for a devotee. If God does not hold back from soothing a sulk, how can a mortal refuse?

Sundarar understood that leaving one who has sulked without understanding and soothing is like cutting the root, and with the Lord's help he saved that root. This story is a good illustration of Valluvar's verse.

Whose quiet withdrawal have you taken for a passing mood when it was really a withering root?
