Explanation

On a day when the sun scorches, water kept in the shade becomes cool and sweet; water lying in the sun grows hot and distasteful. The water is the same; the taste changes when the place changes. Likewise the sulk is the same, but it is sweet only when it is made with one who loves us. The implied sense of the verse is that a sulk made with one without love is bitter or useless, like water lying in the sun.

'Veezhunar' means those who love. 'Kanne' comes in the sense of 'only in them'. So the subtlety of the verse is that the sweetness of the sulk lies not in the one who sulks but in the love of the one who receives it. By saying indirectly that the sulk of one who loves him is sweet to him, the hero honours the heroine's love.

Here the sun and the shade are signs of two different surroundings in life. When there is the shade called love, the water called sulk becomes cool and sweet. In surroundings without love, the same sulk irritates like water lying in the sun.

In our own lives we also see that the same word, if it comes from one who loves, is a pet rebuke, and if it comes from one without love, is a wounding word. The surroundings decide the taste. So in a relationship one must first grow the shade called love.

A story

Rama and Sita at Chitrakuta

The Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana beautifully describes the Chitrakuta hill and the river Mandakini. The original says that there Rama showed Sita the beauty of the river. The small incident of a sulk below is not in the original; it is an imaginative extension that the storytelling tradition gives to that setting. Please read it knowing this.

In the early days of the forest exile, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana built a hut on the Chitrakuta hill and stayed. The Mandakini river flowed at the foot of the hill. On its bank, trees stood giving shade.

One day Rama, absorbed in his work, did not speak to Sita. She sulked a little, turned her face away and walked to the riverbank. When Rama finished his work, he went to look for her.

Sita stood under a large tree on the bank of the Mandakini. Rama came near, took up river water in his hand and said, 'Sita, in the sun the water is hot; the water in the shade of this tree is cool and sweet. Your sulk is like this: if another made it, it would burn like the sun; when you make it, it is sweet like shade.' Sita smiled.

The two enjoyed the beauty of the river. Rama showed her the flowers floating on the Mandakini. In that lovely forest that Valmiki describes, love itself stood as the shade.

This setting shows charmingly that a sulk is sweet in the shade of love.
