Explanation

The hero, who has been singing of the sweetness of the sulk, in this verse admits a pain that lies in it too. Once a sulk has begun, a longing arises as to when union will come; the fear 'will the union be delayed?' settles in the heart. That fear is the pain in sulking. The nature of a sulk is that sweetness and pain are mingled together.

Commentators take the phrase 'punarvadhu needuvadhu andru kol' in two ways. One is the doubt whether the union will be long delayed. The other is the worry whether this union, once it comes, will last. What is common to both is the longing that arises from uncertainty. At the moment of the sulk, though the hero knows the firmness of his love, he cannot know when the heroine's heart will soften.

This verse does not deny the beauty of pulavi; it shows its deep honesty. In love the sulk has sweetness and a little bitterness too. The courage to admit that little bitterness is the maturity of love.

In our own lives too, when a quarrel arises with a loved one, the worry 'when will this end' weighs on the mind. It is good not to bury that worry within but to express it gently and seek a way to soothe. The good of the pain in sulking is that it also urges the effort to soothe.

A story

Srinivasa and Lakshmi on Tirumala

This is a tale told in many forms in the sthala purana tradition of Venkatachalam. Its details vary from text to text; here we tell its basis with respect.

Once, when sages were performing a sacrifice, they chose the sage Bhrigu to learn which of the three Divine Ones was greatest. When Bhrigu went to Vaikuntha, the tale says, Vishnu did not receive him in due form. The sage grew angry and kicked Vishnu on the chest. Vishnu did not become angry; he took hold of the sage's foot and pressed it, asking, 'My chest is hard as stone; has your foot not been hurt?' The sage understood his greatness of heart and bowed.

But Lakshmi, who dwells on Vishnu's chest, could not bear this. Grieved that her very dwelling had been struck, she left Vaikuntha and went to Kolhapur. Vishnu was deeply distressed. His wife's sulk gave him a great longing: 'When will she return? Will this separation be long?'

With that sorrow, tradition says, Vishnu came down to the earth and stayed in an anthill on Venkatachala hill as Srinivasa. There, as he waited hungry and longing, a devotee helped him with the milk of a cow. Later, they say, he married Padmavati, and Lakshmi joined him again.

Even today at Tirumala the figure of Lakshmi is seen on the Lord's chest. The longing of separation and the joy of reunion are honoured by devotees as the legend of this shrine.

To reflect on

In a quarrel, do you voice your worry about how long it will last, or bury it?
