Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaThe People of Ayodhya Follow Rama
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. When Rama set out for the forest, all of Ayodhya was drowned in tears. Elders, brahmins and ordinary folk followed his chariot, saying, "Wherever Rama is, that is our Ayodhya."
On the bank of the Tamasa river, everyone slept for the night. Rama felt that the people who loved him should not suffer with him in the forest. Before dawn, before they woke, he had the chariot turned as if heading back to Ayodhya, and quietly parted from them.
The people would not let go of Rama, and Rama would not let go of the people's welfare. When he returned after fourteen years, those same people welcomed him with lamps. To one who lived in harmony with his land, the whole land became family.
