Meaning

To free the gods from their prison in the stagnant cosmos, the Lord who ties flowered anklets on his little feet rode forth on his plumed steed, the peacock, and Sura's army broke; when he took up his matchless spear and sent it forth, the eight mountains made way.

Explanation

'Little feet' reminds us that Murugan is a child; even before those little feet Sura's army breaks. When the spear sets out, the mountains themselves make way: no obstacle stands before grace.

From the Kanda Puranam and the tradition of Tiruchendur

The camp at Senthur

Setting out for war with Sura, Murugan made his camp on the seashore at Tiruchendur. The Kanda Puranam says he worshipped Shiva there before the battle; even today the Murugan of Senthur stands holding a lotus in the pose of worship. From there he sent Veerabahu as envoy, and from there he marched to war. On the sixth day of Kanda Sashti, the Soorasamharam is still enacted on that shore.
