Meaning

O you who celebrate your own greatness without praising the Lord of the sharp spear! On the day warlike Yama carries you off, who will carry your jewels, your garlanded women, your mansion and your money chest? You will be ruined! What foolishness is yours!

Explanation

We think we carry our possessions; in truth they carry us. On the day Yama comes, they will stay right here. Praising the Lord is the wealth that goes with us.

From the tradition of King Janaka

Mithila burning

As King Janaka sat in a discussion of wisdom with sages, news came: 'The city of Mithila is on fire!' Some of the sages ran to save their water pots and deerskins. Janaka calmly said, 'If Mithila burns, nothing of mine burns.' The fire turned out to be a test. One who owns everything yet clings to nothing as 'mine' is truly rich.
